Representing every reader

There was huge excitement in the LRC last week when 300 free books arrived! Regular library users and members of our school Diversity group got in on the ‘unboxing’ and discovered a wide range of fiction and factual texts by and representing the experiences of Black, Asian and global majority writers. These books have been provided by Penguin Books and The Runnymede Trust through their Lit in Colour project which aims to make the teaching and learning of English Literature in UK schools more inclusive.

We are delighted to have been accepted as a Lit in Colour Pioneer for 2023/4. Ms Chillington and the English Faculty applied for this project as part of their diversity journey which includes diversifying the taught curriculum and broadening our understanding of cultural capital to better reflect the diversity and experiences of our whole school community. In September Y9 will be studying our new text, Akala’s The Dark Lady and Y12 will explore Lynn Nottage’s play Sweat.

Now… we’ve just got to find shelf space for all these lovely new books!
