E is For Engineering

Leeds University delivered some outstanding sessions to our pupils about the exciting world of Engineering. In October, the universities STEM outreach team visited our school to deliver some workshops. The sessions were delivered by engineering PhD students Sophie and Hannah. Pupils were treated to two hours of engaging, hands on engineering activities. Year 8 and 9 learnt about civil engineering in a humanitarian challenge helping a community rebuild after a volcanic eruption. They also took part in a second activity which focused on Biomedical Engineering and worked in teams to design a prosthetic leg for a amputee who wanted perform complex dance moves.

Year 7 pupils took part in an applied mathematics challenge where they had to work together to help a surgeon decide if a patient suffering from scoliosis needed an operation or for an engineer to design a bespoke back brace. Their second challenge was “The Great Leeds Build Off” where they had to work in teams to replicate a wooden block building perfectly. Pupils had a great time and learnt a lot about the exciting world of engineering!
