Arkwright Engineering Scholarship
08/05/2022
Congratulations to Laura, Year 12, who has been awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. This very prestigious award is granted to hard-working students, supporting them through their A levels or equivalent qualifications.
Every Scholarship is sponsored by a commercial company, university, professional institution, armed service or government organisation. This means that support is offered in various different ways, valuable hands-on work experience, support for curriculum projects and a personal mentor who can help with aspects of the student’s studies and career planning.
Laura had to go through a rigorous application process and interviews, part of which was making an engineering-related project and answering questions around her future goals. Laura’s project involved making a birdfeeder which had a weight sensor in the base of it, so it could tell its user when it was empty via an LCD screen. She created both a model of the feeder out of clear acrylic, using the laser cutter and a hot glue gun. She also modelled the circuit for the project using python initially, and then an Arduino nano and various electrical components. The keen engineer used both hand-drawn drawings and google SketchUp to try out different designs and for my end design.
Congratulations Laura on gaining a place on this prestigious scholarship programme.
