Berlin 2025

At the start of April, 44 pupils and 5 staff took part in a History and RS trip to Berlin.

Over the course of four days the group visited various sights in and around Berlin that held Historical and Religious significance.

The visit to Sachsenhausen Memorial will last long in the memories of those who visited. This former concentration camp was used by the Nazis from German from 1936 until April 1945 as a forced labour camp, tens of thousands of people were killed at the camp during this period. The group visited in the morning and there was a stark contrast between the quietness (with birds chirping in the background) and visiting the sites of mass murder. Pupils were extremely respectful throughout this visit, and it brought home the importance of working for peace in our own lives.

Olivia, a Y10 pupil said, “The trip was full of a variety of different activities and sightings, some that were quite hard-hitting for example the Sachsenhausen memorial. Even though this was a difficult experience I felt I needed to see that and understand what happened I found every day interesting, and this experience will be something I will never forget”

Other highlights included visiting the East Side Gallery and the DDR (Life in East Germany) museum, as well as the Olympic Stadium, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenberg Gate and the Reichstag.

Pupils had time for socialising, with a quiz organised by Ms Moon one of the evenings and the group went bowling on another. Staff even had time for fun too, with Mr Sanderson (unofficially) joining the Berlin Half-Marathon.

Astrid, a Y10 pupil said, “The trip was well organised and everyone knew what they were doing. The trip tested our maturity and independence and also helped us develop our confidence”

Mr Sanderson, Leader of History, who led the trip said. “Pupils really enjoyed the experience of learning outside of the classroom, in a major capital city. They were respectful and fully engaged and were a credit to themselves, their families, and the Titus Salt School community. Thanks should also be given to the staff who gave up the start of their holidays to help run the trip.”
