Pupils experienced Spanish culture first hand over May half term whilst visiting Madrid. The educational residential trip is organised to encourage our language pupils to use and practise their Spanish speaking skills whilst experiencing the culture of Spain. Lots of activities were planned over the 5 day trip, including a visit to Santiago Bernabeu football stadium, El Retiro park; one of the largest parks in the city. Pupils viewed the painting ‘Guernica’ by Picasso in the Reina Sofia Museum. Royalist fans took in the sights of the Royal Palace and our historians enjoyed a visit to the Temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple that was dismantled and rebuilt in Madrid.

By night, pupils had time to unwind and have fun; including Hard Rock Café followed by bowling and another was spent eating churros at the famous San Ginés Chocolatería. Pupils made the most of meal times and especially enjoyed the Spanish breakfast with fresh Spanish Tortilla and Pan con Tomate available every morning. Pupils impressed the locals with their language fluidity at meal times and even tried really hard to use their Spanish whilst enjoying a shopping trip in the city centre.

Trip leader and Spanish teacher Miss Milnes said: “We had a really great time; the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was obvious the pupils had worked hard this year when we saw their language skills in action, they were very impressive. The hostel was complimentary about our impeccable behaviour which is always a nice thing to hear.”
