The English faculty and First Story writer, Andy Craven-Griffiths, were so impressed with a piece of writing from one of our First Story writers last year, that they nominated it for the First Story Showcase Event as part of their Young Writers’ Festival. It was no surprise the judges from First Story agreed that Ben’s piece of work ‘Lucid Dreaming’ was an exceptional piece of text.

Ben, Year 9 was put forward with other young writers to take part in the special showcase event, where all nine aspiring writers performed their own pieces, receiving personalised feedback from best-selling YA author and poet Dean Atta.

Dean’s debut novel, The Black Flamingo won the Stonewall Book Award. His work often deals with themes of gender, identity, race and growing up. A patron of LGBT+ History Month, he has been named one of the most influential LGBT people in the UK.

Ben delivered his piece with confidence, Dean was very impressed and said ‘Well done Ben, gosh that piece was terrifying! There were so many moments there, where I could picture it so vividly, your descriptions were incredible!
