Year 9 have been looking at an extract of Captain Scott’s diary and how he talks about his experiences exploring the South Pole. Students then had to write observations of their January experiences in the same style as Scott, entitled “January Impressions”. Here are some examples below:

Archie M

The biting wind that turns my cheeks rosy red.
The white of the frosty morning field.
The first powerful strike of a football.
The squelch of the wet soil under my feet.
The bubbling of melted cheese on my pizza for tea.
The call from my Mum to get me out of bed on these dark chilly mornings.
The smell of the wet trees as I walk through the woods.
The crunch of the leaves under my feet as I walk with my dogs.

Poppy S

The sweet taste of the leftover Christmas cake.
The crisp morning air making your eyes water.
The keeping and breaking of bizarre resolutions.

Charlie C

The irresistible urge to formulate a plan for the year.
The rich velvet of the theatre seats.
The great beginning of a new, exciting era.
The pleasant return to the regular routine.
The cold, mundane weather of British winter.
The chance to use your new material possessions.
The time to reflect on new memories.
The panicked realisation that a mandatory item has gone astray.
The inability to think of another mildly interesting sentence.
The appreciation of the peace and quiet January has to offer.

Eleanor A

The copper sunrise over Leeds.
The smog grey colour covers Bradford.
The rain crashing against the glass.
The clock patiently tapping out the hours.
The wind shaking the trees like a storm.
The unwanted chattering of youth misbehaviour.
The rushing to get the tree down is done like clockwork.
The peace returning on the 1st after days of parties.
The bang of fireworks filling the night.
The list of jobs that won’t happen in a year begins.
The alarm of the broken car filling the street with sound.

Cheyenne T

The icy paths describe the temperature.
The frosty breeze sends shivers down my spine.
The frosted windows on every car that drives past.
The people shivering while watching their steps.
The children laughing as the fall and slip on the icy floor.

Hermione C

The beautiful sunrise that coloured the sky.
The writing that covered the page.
The skyscraper building covering the sky.
The smells of bakeries giving a lovely smell.
The frosty breeze that sends shivers down my spine.
The frosted windows on every car that drives past.
