Animals have rights

Animal cruelty is a tragic and major part of today. Throughout the world, animal cruelty is rife!  It has been around for centuries, ever since people have been able to control helpless, frightened animals and cage them forever. We think that we look after our animals when really they should be running free in the wild. However, there are many animals that are being encaged, stalked and captured every minute of every day.

Animals are used for entertainment purposes such as: zoos, circuses and animal baiting. Many people believe that zoos are helping animals but, as we know, not all are like that; some help to breed animals. Zoos may look harmless but they can actually be very cruel. This is not intentional though.  The way that some animals are trapped in tiny enclosures can harm an animal’s mental state and physical ability to do things such as clean or even eat without being watched. Some enclosures don’t have enough room for animals to run, they are lucky if they aren’t sharing this small area with more than three animals.

Circuses are another big opportunity for animals to be in agony. They are forced to do stunts that are unnatural and that they don’t want to do. Again, not all circuses are like this only a few actually use animals.

In 2015, many demands from MPs were made and eventually animal acts in circus in the UK were banned. Circuses mainly used animals to gather attention from the public to bring more money in for the owners. This was of no benefit to the animals; all they would receive was a treat if they were lucky!

Animal baiting isn’t as common as it was in the Victorian times. This is because it is a vile and horrible event.


Through this process, two or more dogs would ferociously attack the feeble creature that would have been chained up to a tree. Dog baiting (fights) have prompted over 5,000 calls in Yorkshire over the past decade. In 2015 there were 7,694 in Yorkshire, many were in Bradford. There are many companies working together to ensure these events are closed down before they take place. It is thought to be one of the reasons that why, on average, a dog is stolen in the Bradford district every twelve days – Bradford RSPCA Inspector Sarah Bagley 2015.

There are many voluntary groups that help these poor animals get out of their misery and try to make their life much better while it lasts, such as the RSPCA. The idea of these groups is to try and decrease the number of animals abused per year. They save around 41,000 in their 9 shelters every year and have also investigated 13,649 complaint calls so far. Another group called WWF (world wildlife fund) help more extreme cases of animal cases such as extinction. They are responsible for helping many animals from tigers in Siberia to the polar bears in the North Pole. One of the main ways they bring in funding is encouraging its members of the public to adopt an animal. This profit is then used to help protect and look after animals that are in danger. Within Bradford there are many volunteer centres that have been set up to help overcome the issues with cruelty against animals. One organisation is Allerton Cat Rescue. Allerton Cat Rescue was founded over 40 years and relies heavily on the donations. The rescue centre is run by volunteers who care for abandoned and mistreated felines. The centre has helped to care for and rehome thousands of cats over the last 40 years.  

Animal cruelty throughout the world is a huge concern. It can be seen that there are many types of animal cruelty. There are many companies, such as: RSPCA, PAAG, and WWF who are battling against the issues to try and reduce the amount of animal cruelty that is happening all around us.




Titus Salt leads the way

At Titus Salt School, we are promoting leadership as we believe it is a crucial skill that people need to develop throughout their lives. This is also important because leaders are there to guide people in the correct way and can be used as role models within all sporting activities.

Throughout the sporting community, there are numerous examples of where sportsmanship is lacking. Even situations where footballers are spitting at fans off the football pitch. These are terrible examples of role models for young people, hence why leadership is a very important concept to encourage pupils to take part in.

Initially, the most important aspect of becoming a successful leader in sport is communication. This can be used in lots of different ways, such as, verbal and non-verbal where they use their speech and body to communicate. This can include using such things hand gestures and facial expressions. Within Titus Salt School, there is a huge drive to learn about leadership in the sporting community. This is shown strongly within P.E. lessons and during extra-curricular activities. We pride ourselves on making sure people use these strategies wherever possible.

Sam is a pupil at Titus Salt School. When asked about the importance of leaders in sport, he replied, “Leadership is vital as younger players need someone to look up to” which is something we all need to remember when participating in sporting activities. A positive personality can make people listen to you and follow instructions more closely. It can help people relate to others and therefore be a more successful leader.

Organisation is very important for a leader to get the most out of a class.  If a leader waits for everyone to show up before setting the equipment up, this is time wasted for the pupils because they won’t get their full session of learning. All teachers at Titus Salt School will reinforce the importance of being organised during any lesson. This is to ensure that pupils achieve the best out of all lessons.

As you can see, Titus Salt School is leading the way when it comes to leadership. Teachers explain the importance of being a leader within all aspects of the school community. This will help us become more independent and strive to better ourselves in later life.



Mental Health in Adolescents

Mental health isn't openly discussed in society at times nowadays. However, many celebrities and YouTube creators are talking about it and encouraging people to get help to deal with it, thus raising the concept’s profile .It has become a more well-known topic of discussion.

Dan, a YouTube creator, opened up about his struggle with depression and has become an ambassador for the ‘Young Minds’. World Mental Health Day was created as a way of encouraging discussions of mental health on a more regular basis, and bringing it to the forefront of people’s daily lives. These sorts of actions are bringing more awareness to the major issue of mental health in teens. The amount of teenagers with mental health problems have increased in the past few years. The rate of depression in teens has increased 70% in the past 25 years which is a shocking figure. Due to this, there has also been an increase in suicide rates. Suicide rates have gone up by 24% in the last 15 years. This surely has to show that we need to have more awareness of this before there isn't anything more we can do to prevent it.

Teens nowadays are called lazy reckless and disrespectful. Consequently, sometimes the only thing people can do with themselves is lay in their beds. Teenagers tend to only display reckless behaviour because, more often than not, they don't open up about the thoughts that are bothering them.

At times, adults can struggle to support teenagers as a number are reluctant to talk about any issues they are experiencing.

A friend of mine who is struggle with mental health issues didn't get help until she felt she was at the end of the road. She said, "I didn't know how to talk to someone about this. It was all locked up inside. It felt like I physically couldn't talk to anyone about the issue as it was so hard to open up about it.

I now knew that I needed to talk about it to help me get through the situation. Therapists, friends and family have been amazing and have helped me start to deal with the situation properly." I believe we need to start talking more openly about this problem and then perhaps we can start to get people who need help, help.

It is extremely important that we spread awareness of this issue to more people now. If we don't, suicide rates could continue to rise and no one will be able to stop them. So we need to act now before it's too late and change the view of talking about mental health before it destroys generations.




Is VAR a Crisis?

The video assistant referee (VAR) is an association football assistant referee. This reviews decisions made by the head referee by using video footage and a headset for communication. It has recently been implemented into the game of football. This is especially seen within the English Premier League and other English cups, such as, the FA Cup and Carabao Cup as a way of alleviating any dispute on decisions within the game.

It has faced some controversies, however. For instance, in recent matches, which included Manchester United and Huddersfield, it was put into play but was not received positively by some fans. The main reason for this was because of how long it took to use the system. It meant that a goal was disallowed, giving Manchester United a 2-0 lead over Huddersfield. As Juan Mata netted 2 goals for United, a sudden stop was made. All celebrations suddenly came to an end as the referee signalled a stop and it went over to the VAR. After five nail biting minutes, the decision was made and the goal was disallowed which a number of United fans and players appeared to disagree with. This isn’t the only example of when a VAR decision appears to have not been completely accurate. 

At Titus Salt School, we pride ourselves on giving accurate decisions by the referee wherever possible. In amateur leagues like the one we play in, we don’t get the opportunity to use VAR as it’s very expensive and isn’t good value for money. This is because a number of players and coaches appear to disagree with it and seem to not think very highly of it.  A lot of these opinions are due to the supposed inaccuracy of some of the decisions made at a more professional level, making aspects of the game seem lengthy and feel like they are dragging on.

This has to change to make sure more people are involved. They either have to remove it and work on the accuracy of the decisions to then implement it back into the game. Alternatively, it could go back to how it was originally, where it could only be judged by the human eye as there was nothing wrong with that. At times, only minor mistakes were made but that’s surely better than having to wait five minutes to start celebrating the goal that was scored? VAR needs to be changed and improved by the World Cup this year as it is going to be used in these competitions once every four years. This is a competition that most player dream of participating in so it needs to be correct.

However, this can be improved with only a few changes. When VAR reaches its best point, it will change the game for the better, not worse. It is very successful in other sports such as rugby and tennis, so this will hopefully be emulated in football as well. This could mean that it will be seen in any professional game. In my opinion, VAR should hopefully be at its peak and at its best by the time World Cup in 2018 arrives.




Girls' Football: Shooting to new heights

As a society, we have come from football being considered a ‘sport for boys’ to schools holding extra-curricular activities such as ‘girls’ football’ and many football clubs forming girls’ teams of all ages.

Some professional players are earning more than £60,000 a year, plus endorsements, both of which were unthinkable a decade ago. Around 10 years ago, I joined a football team that was predominantly boys. It didn’t faze me that I was the only girl in the team because I my passion was to play football and that is what I was there to do regardless. At the time, I went to school with the majority of the boys in the team and had known them for years, many of which I still get along with now. I ended up leaving the team simply because I didn’t feel welcome. The other players would never pass me the ball no matter how loudly I shouted and I would occasionally hear comments from some of the parents. Comments such as, “Why is she in the boys team?” and “She just stands there and watches the boys play”. This was daunting for me at the time; I was confused and was asking questions. Something I loved doing was no longer enjoyable any more so I decided to leave. Despite all of those comments that I remember hearing as a child, I endeavoured to carry on and I am now playing for a local girls’ team. I couldn’t be enjoying it any more than I do. Playing football is something I look forward to, the feeling when the ball blasts into the back of the net is so rewarding. I have been awarded several awards from my coaches which gives me a sense of self-belief, knowing that the effort I put in is noticed and I now strive to score more goals each game!

The best-paid female English football players earn around £35,000 a year from their clubs- the kind of money that a wholly average male player in the premier league will earn a week. Although to me, it is not about the money, I certainly wouldn’t be happy about getting a fraction of their yearly earnings for doing the same job. This is something that girls need to stand up and argue for because nothing will change if we don’t let people know how we feel. After speaking to some school students, I have gathered some opinions on the subject.

Titus Salt student Lauren said, “I think that more girls should join football teams because too many girls are expected to love dressing up and wearing tonnes of make-up when that isn’t what they want to do.” A second student, Emily, said, “Girls shouldn’t be afraid to step down from the stereotypical ‘girl’ figure that they are expected to be and if you want to play football go for it. Prove those people wrong!”After speaking to Prince William, England Women’s Captain Steph Houghton said, “He said how proud he was, and how we played our football showed how much it meant to us, and that he really enjoyed watching us.” This goes to show that even the royals appreciate the effort that the Lionesses go to succeed which must be so rewarding for them to hear.

The media also has a significant influence in the choice and participation of sport. The media itself has functioned to create a certain impression of each game which in turn affects participation in that sport. It has also undoubtedly taken increased interest in reporting male sports more often than female sports. The result is the profile for female sports personalities’ remaining low.

Are Famous Footballers - Good Role Models?

Children nowadays aspire to be like their inspirational idols. The question is, is that a good thing or not?

Social media has a very big impact on the people’s perceptions of footballers and sometimes they can be seen as arrogant and complacent. This can change how younger footballers act as they want to be seen to be like the footballers they see on social media. This is because they think that it will make them seem more professional if they act and talk in that way.

85% of school children around the age of 8+ agree that they look up at their sporting inspiration on social media to see how they act and what they get up to. They also agree that this reflects on how they alter their behaviour and attitude, and sometimes changes the way that they play sport.

62% of these children asked wanted to go on to play professional football. One of these children is Ben. Ben is 15 and goes to Titus Salt School. He plays for his local team ‘The Tigers’. Ben agrees that some highly paid footballers are “too big-headed and don’t set a good example for younger children”.

Tim, coach of the Tigers says that some children wanting to go on to play professionally are “only wanting it for the fame and the money, nothing else. They don’t appear to play because they enjoy it and want to set an example. They just want fame and money!”

Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid footballer in the world, earning around £365,000 a week and is on a 5 year contract with Real Madrid for £206 million. In my opinion, I think that it is a lot of money to say people in the army earn less and they’re risking their lives for people every day but footballers aren’t. Even though Ronaldo earns a lot, he does lots for charity and hospitals but this isn’t publicised on social media as much. He is sometimes perceived as a rich footballer that doesn’t do anything for anyone. This supports the concept of some children wanting to become a footballer purely for the money!

As well as earning a lot, Ronaldo could be seen as coming across in an arrogant and self-centred manner. This is because he likes to let others know how good he is, “Maybe they hate me because I’m too good!” Is could be a factor that relates to why more children appear be getting into more petty arguments on the pitch?

On the other hand, footballers do set good examples. Despite what people see on social media, they donate some of their earnings to charities and go visit children who are unable to pursue their dreams. On one visit, Ronaldo gave out kits, signed footballs and took pictures with all the children. He also delivered a speech telling the children to never give up on their dreams and always fight for what they want. This speech soon went global and inspired many children who wants to pursue their dreams of becoming a professional footballer. Many people’s opinions with regards to footballers soon changed.

So I guess the question still remains. Are famous footballers good role models for your children?




Rhea Reaching for Gold

A women’s heptathlon is a combination of track and field events within an athletics environment. This is where females compete in seven separate and rigorous events in order to become the overall champion of the competition. It usually takes place over two days.

The women’s heptathlon consists of three running events:

  • 800m
  • 200m
  • 100m hurdle

Two jumping events:

  • high jump
  • long jump

Two throwing events:

  • Shotput
  • Javelin

Women’s heptathlons are usually held outdoors. The first ever heptathlon was introduced in the 1980s and it first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1984.

Rhea, my older sister, is 16 years old and she has been running since the tender age of 8. She was first introduced to running when her grandad suggested the concept and encouraged her to try it at her local cross country club; she hasn’t stopped since. From that day, Rhea has come a long way, training at four different clubs over her time and winning countless medals and competitions throughout the years.

There is a lot of work involved when building up to events and it is a very important process. Rhea has to do things such as maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet, and stay hydrated at all times to be at her peak for competitions. She also trains at least 4 to 5 days a week for 3 hours a time which can be very stressful.

There are restrictions in place which means that Rhea isn’t allowed to take part in any contact or dangerous sports before training or competitions to prevent the risk of injury.

All of this is a lot to deal with as a 16 year old, meaning it takes a lot of perseverance and determination to stay on track.

Despite things such as injuries, Rhea has achieved many things throughout her time as an athlete, such as, being a Yorkshire champion on ten occasions in individual events. She has also been Yorkshire heptathlon and pentathlon champion six times and holds the all-time heptathlon record. She has been England’s shotput champion at her age category and, in her recent competing years, Rhea has represented England four times in internationals which are all spectacular achievements. Her proudest moment was representing England for the very first time.

In the near future Rhea aspires to get to the 2020/2024 Olympic Games with the help of her coach Toni Minichiello.



Coach to the top

Jürgen Klopp is a known around the world as a successful sports leader, but he wouldn’t be there without the attributes needed to become successful. Teachers at Titus Salt School are encouraging pupils to take an active role in supporting one another by becoming leaders in the sporting community.

As a pupil at Titus Salt School, I pride myself on being able to communicate with others in a professional and polite manner. Communication is everything when it comes to being a successful leader within the sporting environment. Professional football managers have to be able to speak to their players individually or as a squad to get key information across. This is to help them improve their skills. Managers need strong communication because, in football, there are people that speak other languages so managers will need to communicate with them effectively.

Another key feature for a successful leader is organisation. Ensuring that drills are prepared so they can run smoothly, as well as being challenging for the certain skill levels are crucial for professionals.

A variation on activity structure is important within sport. Managers use structured activities to plan specific drills for different skill levels, meaning that all players attain their best.

Setting targets that can be long term or short term is important. Maintaining high standards for any team sport is very important. Alongside this, being able to evaluate individual player’s progress is also key when it comes to making those vital improvements during play. Making sure players have short and long term targets is vital to the progression of players over a longer period of time.

In conclusion, these are the main attributes needed to be a successful sports leader in the sport, football. I feel that I am actively trying to use these ideas in all aspects of my school life.




Let Me Lead

To be a successful sportsman, having the qualities of a strong leader is very important. There are lots of ways in which people can become good sports leaders, some of which are suggested here. 

Structuring certain activities can make your players improve their skills. This is very good for the team, if the sports leader sets up training drill such as, passing drills or shooting drills, it is going to make his team better. This also links to target setting as it is important for a sports leader to sets a goal for his team. This could include what position they want to finish, getting in a certain place in the cup or even signing a specific player to strengthen your team. I would like to see myself as a strong leader when it comes to situations like this.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a one of the most successful and inspirational managers of our time. His target setting and drive to maintain high standards are what made him into such an effective manager. He would always think methodically when it came to how certain players should create formations on the pitch. He could identify any weaknesses and work on those using the high skill-set he has. He managed to win countless trophies during his time as manager at Manchester United. He is someone I aspire to be like as a sports leader. 

In any walk of life, it is good to not take yourself too seriously. So to be able to get your ideas across to others is important, especially to work on relationships with others so they follow your lead. This also links to the way you present yourself and your appearance as it says a lot about a sports leader.

When considering any sports activities, health and safety is something that needs to be approached with caution. A sports leaders has to look after his team; if there is a player wanting to come back from injury but they are not 100% fit, he should not let them play as it puts them at risk of getting worse. Take my Sunday league coach, if he didn’t know the rules of football how is he supposed to teach us? He needs to know all the rules to teach us to develop us into better players whilst thinking about how to keep up from injuring ourselves.

In conclusion, if you apply all of these skills and attributes to your game or the way you manage a team, you will hopefully become a better player.




Manchester United vs Liverpool. The Game of Champions

On the 10th of March 2018, Manchester United beat Liverpool F.C. is a gripping match between the two clubs.

Marcus Rashford brought the three points to Mourinho’s side after making his first recall to the squad since 26th December. The win against Liverpool meant Mourinho’s United narrowed the gap on runaway leaders Manchester City to just thirteen points. As Marcus Rashford was making his first league appearance since 26th December, he quite rightly gripped the headlines. However, it was Romello Lukaku who was an integral part of both goals. Liverpool appeared to come across as weakened by his physical strength and seemed as though they could not deal with it in the first half. The first goal came from a spectacular David de Gea clearance, which meant Lukaku was able to head the ball to Marcus Rashford. He then charged into the visitor’s boxes and cut inside Trent Alexander-Arnold, before firing it into the bottom corner. 

The second goal was when Lukaku held the ball up from another goal kick, before feeding it to Juan Mata. Although he could not get a shot away, the ball fell for Rashford to score via a slight deflection from Alexander Arnold.

At this stage, it could be argued that Liverpool were second best in every area of the pitch and could have easily fallen further behind. When suddenly, Juan Mata volleyed Alexis Sanchez’s cross wide in an acrobatic form.

Jurgen Klopp’s side improved dramatically after the break, forcing United to defend deeply. The visitors cranked up the pressure without ever really opening their hosts.

Eric Bailly managed to divert Sadio Manes’ cross past de Gea whilst attempting to clear the ball at the near post. That gave Liverpool’s travelling fans hope but their side could not fashion any further clear chances, even in six, often chaotic, minutes of stoppage time.

Manchester United survived the lead to clinch the victory in the first of three games here in the next seven days. That will surely shape the rest of their season.




Disaster Strikes

The Munich disaster happened on the 6th of February 1958 when the British airways flight 609 crashed. This appeared to be because it was its third attempt at taking off from a slush-covered runway at Munich airport in West Germany. On the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the ‘Busby Babes’, along with supporters and journalists. Twenty of the forty-four people on the aircraft unfortunately died at the scene. The injured, some unconscious, were taken to the Rechts der Isar hospital in Munich. Here, three more people lost their lives, resulting in twenty-three fatalities and only twenty-one survivors in total. 

The team was returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, having eliminated Red Star Belgrade to advance the semi-finals of the competition. The flight appeared to have stopped to refuel in Munich because a non-stop flight from Belgrade to Manchester was beyond ‘Elizabeth’ class. After refuelling, it has been said that pilots James Thain and Kenneth Rayment abandoned take off twice because of boost surging in the left engine, making the conditions very dangerous. Apparently, fearing that they wouldn’t be able to take off again, the captain, James Thain, demanded to have an overnight stay.

When they stayed over, they had heavy snowfall. This meant that the engine in the aircraft had apparently frozen, unbeknown to the pilot. Unfortunately, apparently due to this situation, it looked as though the catastrophic crash took place. It has been said that a fire burst out of the engine, causing all of the fatalities and injuries mentioned previously.

There is still an on-going investigation into what exactly happened that day.




Egyptian Crazy

The idea of Egyptian historical figures has always interested me. This is why I would like to share some of my passion and knowledge with you.

What does goddess Isis represent?
According to her myth, Isis was the first daughter of Geb. Geb was god of the Earth, and Nut, goddess of the Sky. She was born on the fourth day. She married her brother, Osiris, and she conceived Horus with him. Isis was important when it comes to the resurrection of Osiris when he was murdered by Set.

Hathor Egyptian
Goddess Hathor. Hathor in Egyptian mythology was a sky goddess and the patron of love and joy. She was usually represented as a cow, with a cow's head or ears. She was also presented with a solar disc between a cow's horns. Her name means 'House of Horus'.

Why was Hathor important to the Egyptians?
She was one of the most important and popular gods throughout the history of ancient Egypt. She was worshipped by royalty and other more everyday people.

Anubis Egyptian god
Inpu, or Anubis, was an Egyptian god and was the son of Ra. He was the god of the dead and the underworld in Old Kingdom Egypt. Jackals (a kind of wild dog) went to cemeteries as they were attracted by the smell of dead people's bodies which is not very pleasant. Due to this, Anubis is often shown with the head of a jackal, or and a jackal completely. 

Why do I find the Egyptians so interesting?
Learning about the Egyptians inspires me as the stories are so different to our everyday lives. You can get lost in the interesting and magical lives you read about.
