RSPB’s Wild Challenge Award

Pupils are working towards the RSPB’s Wild Challenge Award which means they have to undertake a variety of activities that allow them to experience nature and improve things for nature. Eco-club restarted this week with a keen band of Year 7 pupils, they conducted a habitat survey on the school site identifying areas that were good for wildlife and areas that could be improved. Good things they found were obviously in the conservation area where bug hotels and log piles built in previous years had provided excellent habitats but also that there were a wide variety of species in the lawns surrounding the main path towards the school.

Problems that were identified was that in places the grass on bankings was being mown too often and by letting it grow it would provide a better chance for wildflowers to grow and this in turn would support insects. Next week eco club members are going to be building micro-habitats for frogs, toads and insects.

    • Good community links add relevance and interest to students’ work. We have strong business links and work closely with voluntary groups, our local primary schools and other organisations. Our growing partnership with local providers is a real strength.

We are keen to be ‘community partners’. Students and staff are active members of local focus groups and attend local forums. As the lead secondary school within the Shipley Achieving Success (SAS) partnership we are proactive in our support with young people and their families. Our Extended School provision is wide ranging and offers opportunities to engage in after school and holiday clubs together with a wide range of workshops.
