Restart a Heart

Valuable lessons were learnt at Restart a Heart Day on 16 October; “doing nothing is the worst thing you can do” was just one of the potent messages that came from our Year 7 pupils at the annual event which teaches people life saving skills of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

St John’s Ambulance volunteers visited school to demonstrate how to perform CPR and how to use a defibrillator. Over 160 school across Yorkshire took part this year, making it the biggest event yet! The Government has recently announced that CPR, defibrillator awareness and basic first aid will be a part of the National Curriculum from 2020. Currently in the UK, less than 8.6%, that’s one in ten people survive a cardiac arrest. In Norway the survival rate is 25%, there, CPR is taught in schools, an additional 100 lives could be saved each week.

Lead volunteer, Adam Drinkall said: “"We had a fantastic day teaching Year 7 the important life-saving skill of CPR as part of this year's Restart a Heart Day.

The pupils were responsive, respectful and enthusiastic, they were all up for giving CPR a go!"

Y7 pupil, Cameron said " Restart a heart is an awesome day because now more people could change the survival rate of people having heart attacks."

  • Community

    • Good community links add relevance and interest to students’ work. We have strong business links and work closely with voluntary groups, our local primary schools and other organisations. Our growing partnership with local providers is a real strength.

We are keen to be ‘community partners’. Students and staff are active members of local focus groups and attend local forums. As the lead secondary school within the Shipley Achieving Success (SAS) partnership we are proactive in our support with young people and their families. Our Extended School provision is wide ranging and offers opportunities to engage in after school and holiday clubs together with a wide range of workshops.
