Year 11 pupils have been given top tips from the boardroom to ensure they can take the advantage when considering next steps in education and career choices.

Staff from six locally based businesses kindly gave their time to act as panellists for the round table discussion. Pupils came prepared and fired thought provoking questions about the world of work to the panel. They were then given sound advice on how to prepare for an interview, how to deal with nerves and the benefits of taking an apprenticeship. Panellists also fielded questions about their own career pathways, allowing an insight into their professional journeys.

The panel of experts included Polly Betts from Arcadis, a design consultancy for natural and built assets; Tracey Dawson of electronics manufacturer, Daletech;

David Coverdale of Egton Digital, a software and IT services company; Nikki Alderson of Nikki Alderson Coaching, a company offering corporate and executive coaching; Alex Saxton from transport company, Transpennine Express and Paul Birtles of precision engineers, Produmax.

Commenting on the success of the event, one pupil said: “I found Polly Betts really interesting and I would really like to work for her in the future.” Another said: “Listening to Paul Birtles from Produmax talk about engineering and apprenticeships has helped me to decide on a career in that industry.”

David Coverdale of Egton Digital said: “I really enjoyed the session and thought it provided some great insights to the pupils who were very attentive.”

  • Community

    • Good community links add relevance and interest to students’ work. We have strong business links and work closely with voluntary groups, our local primary schools and other organisations. Our growing partnership with local providers is a real strength.

      We are keen to be ‘community partners’. Students and staff are active members of local focus groups and attend local forums. As the lead secondary school within the Shipley Achieving Success (SAS) partnership we are proactive in our support with young people and their families. Our Extended School provision is wide ranging and offers opportunities to engage in after school and holiday clubs together with a wide range of workshops.
